Maintaining Refrigerant Dehumidifiers for Higher Efficiency and Longer Life

Refrigerant dehumidifiers or heat-pump dehumidifiers are the most common type or dehumidifiers used for domestic purposes because of their effectiveness at removing moisture from the air. However, these appliances require regular cleaning and monitoring to ensure that they can work properly. If they are not maintained well the air quality in your home will be worsened, the machine will become noisier and your electricity bills may also rise. In worse cases, it may get damaged resulting in costly repairs. Here is a checklist of actions you should take to keep refrigerant dehumidifiers in top condition and to increase their life time.

The location you choose for your home dehumidifier can significantly affects the performance and activity of the dehumidifier. If you have a whole-house dehumidifier that is installed in a basement and attached to your current heating and cooling system, then you don’t have much option in where to place it. However, if you have a small room dehumidifier, and the air is not continuously moved around by your heating or air-conditioning, then place the dehumidifier where the dampness is the highest like the laundry room.  Don’t put it in an area where the air is dirty, otherwise the particles will trap within the moving part of the refrigerant dehumidifiers. As a result, your appliance may require more frequent cleaning or they may also become inefficient because of blockages in air intake.

Make sure to place the dehumidifier in a room of suitable size as suggested by the manufacturer. If the room is too large or too damp then the dehumidifier will have to work continuously which will reduce its life and increase your electricity bills. It will not be effective in bringing down the humidity to optimal levels resulting in energy wastage.

Empty the Water Container

Refrigerant dehumidifiers work by cooling the air and condensing the water vapors in it, which are then either collected in a container or removed continuously by attaching a hose to the appliance. If your dehumidifier stores water, then you must empty the bucket regularly. The frequency with which you need to do it depends on how often you use the dehumidifier and how damp is your home. If the water is not removed, mold or mildew can grow within the container. The water may also overflow damaging the parts of the appliance. You should also monitor the water levels; dehumidifiers usually shut-off automatically if the bucket is full.

Clean and Replace the Filters

The moist air pulled in by refrigerant dehumidifiers is passed through electrostatic-filter to free it off dust particles which may trap within the fans and coils of the machinery inhibiting their movement and performance. You should inspect the filters at least monthly to see if it needs cleaning. If not cleaned, the filter will not work. The filters should be replaced yearly or you should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Examine the Cooling Coils for Frosting and Dirt

If the temperature of the room in which the dehumidifier is placed gets too low then the moisture from the air may freeze on the coils. The unit will not perform well in this state and in worse cases; the collected ice may also damage the machinery. Newer models of refrigerant dehumidifiers come with auto-defrost feature which shuts-off the unit automatically to allow the ice to melt. If frosting is a major problem, then you must use a dehumidifier that can work at lower temperatures.You must also clean the coils at least every season to remove the accumulated dirt and grime.
